St Mary’s Primary School, Duntocher win the Euroquiz!
More than 120 Scottish primary school children gathered in the Scottish Parliament’s debating chamber on Monday 10 May to test their knowledge of European affairs by competing in nationwide competition. There were 32 teams from schools across every local authority area in Scotland, but I was particularly pleased to welcome the teams from St Mary’s, Duntocher and Milngavie Primary from my own constituency.

The St Mary’s and Milngavie Primary teams had already won their respective local authority heats in order to compete against the winners from the other 30 local authorities in the final at the Scottish Parliament.
The competition is widely regarded as a great opportunity for pupils at Primary 6 to expand their knowledge of Europe and the European Union whilst working together as a team. As the event was broadcast on the Parliament’s website it allowed the pupils from all the primary schools around the country to watch and support their friends. I watched the final at St Mary’s Primary school along with class mates and teachers cheering on their team.
The school groups fought it out against each other, answering questions on a range of subjects including history, culture and sport in a bid to become Euroquiz 2010 champions.
I was absolutely thrilled when St Mary’s, Duntocher made it through to the final knock out round where they beat Drymen Primary, Stirling to win Euroquiz 2010. This is the second year in a row that St Mary’s have beaten the best in Scotland, having been the runner-up in last years competition where they were edged out by a team from the Republic of Ireland. To win the top prize is outstanding and I would like to pay tribute to the hard work put in by the team and the continuing efforts of their teacher Clare Donnelly, school mates and staff at the school and parents who all contributed toward this achievement.
Milngavie Primary team also did extremely well in the competition. They came a very credible joint fifth in the competition, having scored 100 points to St Mary’s score of 107. So well done to both Milngavie Primary and St Mary’s Duntocher.
