I have witnessed two suicides this year (2011) whilst walking my dog on the south bank (one in January and one only this week). The second one was most distressing as he surivied the initial fall and tried to swim ashore but then succumbed to his injuries. I agree, additional security measures are needed. My office looks right onto the Erskine Bridge and must be one of the most stunning views from an office in the country. However, every week it is marred by witnessing someone jump to their death over the three foot fence on this bridge. In the past fortnight there have been three that I know have witnessed. The most recent on Sunday. A man stopped his car on the bridge, walked out and jumped right off without a moments stop. If there was a measure as outlined in this article put in place, it is right to say it wouldn't stop the problem of suicide but it would stop this bridge being used for it. Having seen every week the police, their helicopter, the RAF Sea King and the bodies being dragged from the water it is time something was done. Something that myself and some 300 of my colleagues would support. More preventitive measures have to be taken on this bridge. I live in the surrounding area. I am horrified by the change put forward to "Open Plan" It seems to me that there is an ulterior motive to do this. It is obvious that the Council make no argument to justify the change - there is no point, as they say - so why do it? That last has never been answered. It is my thought that the Council will be able to put large "recreational" buildings into the site. Probably commercial which would bring in money. An example might be Sports Centres or Golf Driving ranges or "Goals" type football courts. This might explain their wish/need to make the change of designation. Mr McNulty
